OH, THE MAGICAL MIDSUMMER

Happy Midsummer everyone! Today, I'm going to share with you some spells we Finns tend to cast during the Midsummer.
Midsummer is truly the most magical time of the year.

There are plenty of spells cast during the Midsummer Eve and this is what is the most fascinating part of this all. The spells usually had something to do with women finding themselves a life partner and spells for increasing the fertility.
And the best part of it? Most of the Midsummer spells were done butt-naked. Yes, you read that right. Naked as fuck.

One of the most common spells and something that is done even today is to put nine or seven (depending on which part of Finland you are from) different flowers under your pillow when you fall asleep. In your dreams, you should see your future life partner.

Another common spell is to go back towards the pile of wood. Where your butt hits first, that's your future man. And no, I don't mean his penis, or do I? If the wood has been cut, it means that the man is taken, with someone other or widowed. If the wood is whole, the man will be completely yours.

More spells to cast this Midsummer:

- Look to a well or a pond, preferably naked and you'll see your future life-partner

- It's said, that the fern blooms only during the Midsummer night.
Pick it up quickly and you'll have magical powers.

- If you're in the forest during the Midsummer night,
you might see a wisp. Following the wisp, you'll find
the most unexpected treasure.

- You can see your future life-partner in your dream if you
keep your left-foot sock on your foot the wrong way

Why most of these spells should be cast naked?
The clothing will disturb the magic to flow in you and when you're naked, you're at your purest. It can also be that the point of these spells is to get girls running around naked around the villages, who knows. Also, these are pretty ancient ways to lure your future life-partner in your life. I mean, if these are going to lure someone around you, it's going to be the police.

As I've found my life-partner already, you'll see me following wisps in the forest during the Midsummer. Which spell you'll cast? Do you believe in magic?

Ps. Keep up with my Instagram for a Midsummer themed photo series!

  2. I absolutely love learning about other cultures, and magic fascinates me. I believe in it, but it's not something that I've practised (although I did dabble in it in my teen years).

I've always wondered why magic should be cast naked but at least now I have learnt the reason. Following wisps during Midsummer sounds like an amazing adventure!

    1. Hahah apparently clothes stop the energy flowing or something. I’ve always been interested in different spells & magic in general. Don’t know if it exists, but I’d like to think there’s a possibility for that :-)

  3. This post was magical! I didn't know Finland had these sort of traditions but they're so lovely. I much prefer the spells which might lead you to treasure - have you seen Brave? She follows the wisp in that film and I love the photo of you with one!

  9. I do believe in magic and I love the idea of finding your future life partner in a reflection. I didn't know this was part of Finnish culture but I've heard of it in others. I love your photos, especially the one of you and your child looking up at the wisp, it's gorgeous. Lovely post, thank you so much for sharing! x
