KARMAROCK26 | 290717 @ HARJAVALTA, FINLAND

This little rock festival called Karmarock was held for the 26th time in Harjavalta, Finland on 29th of July. What's typical for this festival? They don't reveal the bands before they get up on the stage and the reason why people are buying tickets there is a band called Maj Karma.
Maj Karma was founded in Harjavalta in 1992 and they're playing melodic heavy rock. They've got pretty great songs, so I'd pay 31,50€ just to see them.
Although, the closer the festival got this year it started falling apart just to put it nicely. The band list leaked a few weeks before the event. Great, now everyone knew who was playing there. I, personally was excited about Happoradio, Maj Karma and Mokoma, even though the last one was playing acoustic.

The second thing that screwed up my experience was that Herra Ylppö, the lead singer of Maj Karma was announced to be ill so badly that Maj Karma wasn't able to play at all. There were two options I'm sure everyone bounced in their heads - will they return the tickets and hope that Maj Karma really doesn't play? Or will they show up anyways if this is just a joke that Herra Ylppö has created because the band list had leaked? I fell into the latter category as I was the one who really bought the tickets just to see Maj Karma.

There was a bit cringy moment on the stage when the guys from Maj Karma got up to the stage and asked to send our best wishes for Herra Ylppö, which meant that he really was ill that day. I really thought the whole thing was a joke because well, Ylppö is his own personality and the news was announced at the same time when the event had begun.

Anyways, the guys asked three times "do you know what's coming next on the stage?"
And everyone in the crowd yelled "Attentaatti!" which is Maj Karma's song.
Then they said, "Well, no, it's Salaliitto!" (a band that replaced Maj Karma.)

I've got nothing against Salaliitto but their songs just don't hit me in the good music nerve. They could have had a better replacement in store. Happoradio played well their gig and Mokoma was great also. Actually, they were super great. They lifted up the atmosphere and at the end of the night, I didn't feel like I tossed 31,50€ away for nothing. Thanks to Mokoma for that!

Jone Nikula, who was the presenter at the festival, who I personally met and got to thank from the autograph he signed for my 5-month-old son was also amazing.

I ended up with mixed feelings about the whole festival, but hey - let's hope that the next year will be better! And Herra Ylppö, get well soon!

  9. So unfortunate that the band list leaked before the festival and that Maj Karma couldn't play. Great to see that you didn't feel that the festival was a complete waste of money though!

  20. I'm sorry to hear that they leaked the band names prior to the festival. And it also sucks that one of the major people in one of the bands got sick. That would be awful.
